Seattle Mariners GM provides update on shortstop JP Crawford’s injury

SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners have about a month left in their season and are trying to make one final push for their second playoff appearance in three years.

And it looks like the Mariners are getting an extra boost.

Seattle general manager Justin Hollander took some time before Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays to announce some injury updates to several players, including JP Crawford.

Crawford was with the team on Monday because the minor league team had a day off. He had spent the previous few days rehabbing with the Tacoma Rainiers, a Triple-A affiliate of the Mariners.

Crawford had to play a simulation game to gain some valuable experience since Tacoma did not play on Monday.

Given Hollander's comments, there is some optimism about the possibility of Crawford rejoining the team before the end of the home season.

“JP did a simulation game out here to get some reps — it's obviously a minor league off day,” Hollander said. “We'll see how he feels after today. I would expect the potential to do that again (on Tuesday) and just assess day-to-day how comfortable he feels in terms of the reps he got. He feels good. He felt good, so it's just a matter of how many reps he gets to feel good about playing a major league game.”

Hollander mentioned the possibility of having Crawford play another simulation game rather than sending him back to Tacoma for another rehab assignment.

“It's certainly possible we might decide to go that route if we or he don't feel like there's been enough reps to be comfortable,” Hollander said. “But it's also possible we do everything here (at T-Mobile Park) and then he'll be ready to be activated.”

Hollander also provided an update on the injuries of several other major and minor league players:

Victor Robles, outfielder: Robles will be available as a substitute for Monday's game but was not in the starting lineup for the fourth time in five games. Hollander said he should be in the squad on Tuesday. Robles is dealing with a bruised right index finger and ongoing pain in his hip.

Felnin Celesten, Shortstop: Seattle's fifth-best prospect (according to MLB Pipeline) looked good after undergoing hamstring surgery, according to Hollander, and will likely participate in league activities in the fall.

Cade Marlowe, outfielder: Marlowe, who was with the Mariners for two weeks from July 23 to August 6, will travel to Arizona to see a doctor for a back problem. The doctor will evaluate the severity and nature of the injury and decide how to treat him.
