Fifth-grader was taken away Monday morning after bringing a gun to Avon school

AVON – An Avon Intermediate School East student was expelled Monday for bringing a weapon to school.

According to the Avon School Corporation, a student was found to be in possession of a handgun at school on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at Avon Intermediate School East, a school for fifth and sixth grade students.

According to school officials, the student was immediately tracked down by school administrators after the report was made and his weapon was confiscated. The student was expelled from school.

“Some ammunition was found, but the gun was not loaded,” Kevin, communications coordinator for the ACSC, told WRTV.

The district confirmed that there were no threats and the school day would continue as usual.

“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority at Avon Schools. We regularly tell our students and staff that if they see something, they should tell a trusted adult. We are incredibly proud of the students who followed that advice this morning,” said a press release from the Avon Community School Corporation.

“I'm actually more worried about what the parents are doing than what the school is doing,” parent Jeff Anderson told WRTV.

Mo Canady, a member of the National Association of School Resource Officers who is not involved in the case, says the relationships SROs have with students are critical to preventing such incidents.

“We know that if we have a good relationship with students, teachers and parents, we are much more likely to be able to get more information that can help us prevent something,” Canady told WRTV.
