Mexican convicted of drug trafficking and weapons possession

MEXICO, Missouri (KMIZ)

A jury on Monday found a man from Mexico, Missouri, guilty of drug trafficking and possession of firearms.

According to a press release from the Audrain County District Attorney's Office, a jury found 53-year-old Larry Karhoff guilty of two counts of first-degree drug trafficking, illegal possession of a weapon, drug possession, unlawful use of a weapon and driving while license suspended.

Prosecutors filed charges against Karhoff following a traffic stop in February 2022. A police officer arrested Karhoff for driving without a license. During a search, the officer found methamphetamine, fentanyl, alprazolam and hydrocodone.

Investigators also said Karhoff had a handgun on him. Due to previous convictions, Karhoff was not allowed to own a gun.

After the one-day trial, the jury deliberated for about two hours.

“The jury paid close attention to the evidence and listened carefully to the facts throughout the trial,” said Audrain County Prosecutor Jacob Shellabarger. “I commend them for their focus, persistence and commitment to a just outcome. This jury sent a strong message to the community that drug offenders will be brought to justice, illegal firearms will be stopped and actions have consequences.”

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 7.
