DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dayton Police have released an update on an officer-involved shooting last week.

The incident occurred late Friday night at the De Soto Bass Apartments. Officers arrived at the scene on Custer Place, where Eric Grady allegedly had a gun. They ordered him to drop it, but he refused. Officers then shot Grady in the leg.

On Monday afternoon, Dayton police released 911 calls and bodycam footage of the moments leading up to the shooting.

Police Chief Kamran Afzal says they received several calls about a man outside who, according to witnesses, was carrying an “Uzi.” Officers were on the scene twice, but did not find anyone suspect during their first call.

Hours later, they returned after another 911 call came in. There they found Grady. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop his weapon, but he refused. Shortly thereafter, one officer fired three shots and another fired once, hitting him in the leg. Seconds later, officers called 911.

Police said they found two guns at the scene, both Rugers. One had a 45-round chamber and the other had an extended magazine.

Afzal says that while officers do not intend to fire their weapons, there are rules in place for the public and officers to follow in these situations.

“You have to follow orders. And he should definitely not point a gun at anyone, especially a police officer, or attack a police officer with a knife. Anything like that. Follow orders. And if you have a problem with the conduct of a police officer in the country, especially in Dayton, we have mechanisms to address it,” Afzal said.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, followed by an internal investigation by the Dayton Police Department's Professional Standards Bureau.

Grady is expected to recover and could face several charges. There is no information on what those charges might be.
