The Tennessee football team lineup has been released

We're counting down the days until Tennessee's next football opener, and with that comes the annual release of the Tennessee football team's roster. This roster/team gives fans an idea of what the Vols will look like at the start of the season, but it seems like things are still in flux at the moment.

It could be because the Vols don't want to take their hat off to the famous Chattanooga Mocs or because Tennessee's coaches haven't yet decided what the lineup will look like before the first game of the football season.

The 2024 roster is loaded with starters or potential starters that Tennessee's early-season opponents will have to prepare for. In addition to the traditional 11 starters on both sides of the ball, the Vols have also marked 34 other players as potential starters.

Tennessee's initial roster for the 2024 season answers some questions, such as who will back up Nico. Tennessee's coaching staff appears to be giving Gaston Moore the QB2 job, while rookie Jake Merklinger will be QB3 in Week 1.

However, there are still many questions that need to be answered, also due to Heupel's infamous “-or-” designation, where he does not explicitly state who takes or supports a particular position.

Nearly all seven of the front-line players on defense were listed as potential starters, while six receivers were listed as potential starters. It will be interesting to see who the Vols use at which positions, how often they rotate, and who gets the majority of the snaps in the second and third quarters.

Hopefully, by this point, the game will be out of control and Tennessee's starters and potential starters can rest and prepare for their week two game against North Carolina State in Charlotte.
