Shooting on Des Moines Metro bus leaves one dead on Monday afternoon; suspect at large

A shooting on a northbound Metro A bus in Des Moines left one man dead on Monday afternoon, August 26, 2024; the suspect is still at large, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. while the bus was traveling on International Boulevard near South 216th Street (map below).

Metro Transit Police officers arrived at the scene and found the victim unconscious inside the bus. Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and began life-saving measures.

The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he unfortunately later succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect fled the scene and despite further searches, the police have not yet been able to locate the person responsible.

The bus, which had about 40 passengers on board at the time of the shooting, quickly emptied as many passengers fled after the bus came to a stop.

Authorities have not yet identified the victim and there is no description of the suspect.

The investigation is ongoing and authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
