Report: Tariq Castro-Fields released by Washington commanders

Former Penn State cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields has been released by the Washington Commanders, according to a report by John Keim of ESPN.

Castro-Fields joined Penn State in 2017 and appeared in 12 games during his freshman season. The cornerback made his first start in 2018 and finished his sophomore season second on the team with seven pass breakups.

After two more strong seasons at the position, Castro-Fields used his COVID-19 season to return to Penn State for the 2021 season. In his final year at Happy Valley, the Upper Marlboro, Maryland, native made 32 tackles, giving him a career total of 138 tackles.

Castro-Fields was selected with the 43. Pick in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, but was released before the start of the season. Castro-Fields did not play in the 2022 season, but appeared in eight games in 2023 and recorded four total tackles.

Castro-Fields was the second Nittany Lion to be released by Washington on Tuesday, after Wideout Mitchell Tinsley did not make the final roster either.
