Patriots 2024 roster cuts: Tackle Calvin Anderson released with injury after multiple trades reported

An experienced offensive tackle would be among the New England Patriots' 53 transactions.

According to a report by Chris Price of the Boston Globe, the organization released Calvin Anderson due to an injury before the NFL's roster deadline on Tuesday.

Anderson, 28, was ruled out of the season's final game against the Washington Commanders after making 53 offensive plays in the previous August encounters. His 2023 season included five appearances and two starts in the backcourt, but it began on the non-football list due to malaria and ended on the injured list due to a cardiac contusion sustained in training.

The 6'5″, 300-pound Rice Owl and Texas Longhorn landed in Foxborough as an undrafted rookie in 2019 and was also a member of the New York Jets and Denver Broncos during his NFL career. He played in 41 games, including 12 as a starter, before returning to his first club as a free agent.

In addition, wide receiver David Wallis and defensive end Jotham Russell were released by the Patriots, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reported.

Wallis, 23, signed in June after attending rookie minicamp for a tryout. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound undrafted product from Division III Randolph-Macon College caught two passes for 16 yards during a preseason stint, providing excitement on special teams. He returned seven kickoffs for 275 yards, including a long one of 53 yards, and added four punt returns for 47 yards.

Russell, 20, arrived in New England in May as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway program and was exempted from the 90-man roster while he transitioned to the defensive end position. The 6'4″, 230-pound former Australian rugby player played for the Currumbin Eagles and Tweed Seagulls under-21 teams after previously playing for the Brisbane Broncos' junior squad.

The NFL's roster capping will go into effect leaguewide at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, with practice squads being formed after ineligible veterans clear the waivers list at noon ET on Wednesday.
