Man allegedly shot 16-year-old boy on bus

A grand jury on Oahu has indicted a 19-year-old man on attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot and killed a 16-year-old Farrington High School student who was riding the bus after school on Aug. 9, prosecutors said.

Johnathan Ten is charged with attempted premeditated murder, possession of a pistol or revolver, carrying a firearm during the commission of another crime and possession of a prohibited weapon.

He allegedly shot the teenager on August 9 as he got off a bus on Kamehameha IV Road in Kalihi. Honolulu police are still searching for the getaway driver who allegedly helped him flee the scene.

“Mr. Ten is already charged with kidnapping and first-degree sexual abuse in another case in which his victim was a minor under the age of 14. When the shooting on the bus occurred, he was free on $250,000 bail pending trial in that case,” Honolulu District Attorney Steve Alm said in a statement. “You can be assured that we will do everything we can to protect the public by securing convictions in both cases,” Alm added.

Attempted second-degree murder carries a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Ten is being held without bail pending trial after a judge and prosecutors agreed he should remain in custody. Assistant District Attorney Scott Spallina is handling the case.

Ten's alleged accomplice is described by police as a man in his late teens to early 20s with a slim build and tanned skin.

He was wearing a red baseball cap, a light-colored T-shirt, red pants, black shoes and a black face mask. He also had a black backpack with him.

Ten has a court date in October after being arraigned in May 2023. He is charged with two counts of sexual assault, three counts of child abuse and kidnapping in incidents involving minors, according to court records.

He pleaded not guilty in the case and posted $250,000 bail on March 8.
