Draughn Volleyball beats Freedom in two sets

VALDESE – The Draughn volleyball team picked up a straight-set victory over district and non-conference rival Freedom on Monday, winning at home by scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-15.

With the win, the Lady Wildcats are 5-2 overall this season, including 4-1 against Burke County opponents after DHS tied 2-1 at the Burke County Jamboree earlier this month.

On offense, DHS was led by Bailey Mozeley (10 kills, five aces), Lyrical Edwards (five kills, three aces), Bella Whitson (five kills), Ella Anthony (four kills, assist), Kylie Corpening (three kills, ace), Ava Aldridge (two kills, assist), Shelby Proffitt (two kills, ace, seven assists), Rebecca Feimster (kill), Allyson Auton (kill, five aces, 18 assists) and Macy Auton (ace, two assists).

On defense, Draughn's statistical leaders were Macy Auton (eight digs, 13 receptions), Allyson Auton (six digs), Kristyn Cozort (four digs, two receptions), Peyton Brewer (three digs, two receptions), Mozeley (three digs, four receptions), Edwards (two digs, reception), Proffitt (two digs, three receptions), Aldridge (dig, seven receptions), Anthony (dig), Corpening (dig, reception), Feimster (dig), Whitson (two blocks) and Anthony (block).

The loss dropped the Lady Patriots to a 1-6 overall record, including 0-5 against district opponents, after losing 0-3 at the Jamboree earlier in the season.

Wilkes Central 3, NCSSM-Morganton 0

The Lady Dragons (1-2) were defeated in a non-league road game at Moravian Falls on Monday. No further details were available at press time.

GIRLS TENNIS

Draughn 7, Avery County 2

The Lady Wildcats (2-2, 1-1 Western Highlands 1A/2A Conf.) picked up their first conference win of the fall at home in Valdese on Monday.

In singles, DHS won with No. 1 Aubrey Childers 8-2, No. 2 Maria Medrano 8-3, No. 5 Addelynn Honeycutt 8-3 and No. 6 Mati Kincaid 6-3. Draughn's doubles wins came from No. 1 Childers/Peyton Dale 8-3, No. 2 Medrano/Sasha Duckworth 8-5 and No. 3 Honeycutt/Kincaid 8-4.

South Caldwell 7, East Burke 2

The Lady Cavaliers (0-3) missed their first win of the season on Monday with an away loss outside the league in Sawmills.

EBHS won a singles match with No. 1 Braelyn Stilwell 8-5 and a doubles match with No. 1 Stilwell/Maci McNeil 8-1.

BOYS FOOTBALL

West Caldwell 3, Patton 2

The Panthers (5-1) suffered their first non-league loss at home in Morganton on Monday despite leading 1-0 at halftime.

Abraham Miguel put PHS on the scoreboard first with a goal in the eighth minute after he beat two defenders and fired past the Warriors goalie. But West Caldwell scored three quick goals early in the second half before Trevin Lavoie Patton brought the score back to within one with a goal in the 68th minute.

“We played the last 15 minutes with passion and energy,” said Panthers coach Keith Scott. “Understanding that we have to play the full 80 minutes like we did the last 15 minutes is the key for the future.”

Polk County 2, NCSSM-Morganton 1

The Dragons (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season on Monday with a non-conference home loss in Morganton, trailing 1-0 at halftime before both teams scored a goal after the break.

Senior James Ross scored the lone goal for NCSSM-Morganton.

Statesville 2, Freedom 0

The Patriots (1-4) were undefeated in a non-league away game in Statesville on Monday.

Freshman Beto Flores scored both goals for the host Greyhounds.
