Diamondbacks injury updates for Marte, Walker and Moreno

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo provided detailed injury updates on three key players who missed most or all of August due to injury.

Ketel Marte, 10-day IL due to left ankle sprain. Eligible to return from August 29th

Lovullo said there is no target date for his return and he could not commit to whether Marte could come off the injured list for at least 10 days.

Lovullo said Marte has progressed from the treatment phase to a return-to-play protocol based on his tolerance. Marte has gone from agility drills in the pool to hitting in the batting cage, among other things.

Marte is “pretty asymptomatic,” according to Lovullo. He said the big milestone will be hitting in spikes. Before the injury re-aggravated, Marte completed all of his high-intensity training and checked all possible boxes, played in a game and had a couple of hits.

“But when he really went full throttle and controlled the momentum with spikes, it caught him. So we're going to do a lot with spikes, that will show us where he is and what kind of tests he needs to do.”

Lovullo's message to Marte was, “Look, we need to make sure you're right because we need to go full throttle on this thing.”

Christian Walker, 10-day IL with strain of the left oblique abdominal muscle since July 29th.

Walker took live blood pressure readings on Tuesday. He is slowly increasing the intensity. There is a possibility he could play games in a controlled environment at a “continuation camp” at Salt River Fields. Lovullo was noncommittal about whether Walker will return to major league play before Sept. 1.

Gabriel Moreno10-day IL with strain of the left abductor muscle (groin).

Moreno hit in a cage today. They are still very cautious about what he can do with his lower half of his body. There is no target date for his return. Lovullo has previously expressed confidence that Moreno will return before the regular season is over.
