Alton man sentenced to prison

Orange City, Iowa – An Alton man will serve prison time after agreeing to a plea deal on several charges in Sioux County District Court.

According to the Sioux County District Attorney's Office, 22-year-old Dalton Kade DenHartog Hopcroft was arrested on August 26 for driving under the influence of alcohol (OWI), driving without owner's consent, assault with the use of a dangerous weapon and a probation violation due to previous convictions for drunk driving and drug possession.

The District Attorney's Office says DenHartog Hopcroft was placed on probation last year on July 20 for OWI (first offense) and possession of a controlled substance (third offense). On April 3, 2024, the state filed a motion to revoke probation based on alleged violations.

On May 22, 2024, Orange City Police were called to a fight outside an apartment complex involving the display of a handgun. The investigation revealed that during a physical altercation, DenHartog displayed a CO2-powered BB gun to Hopcroft in a threatening manner, leading the victims to believe the gun was real while threatening to shoot them. On June 6, police filed a report, which resulted in an arrest warrant being issued and served on June 12.

DenHartog Hopcroft was located on June 12 when Sheldon police filed criminal charges against him for second-degree theft and third-degree burglary (auto), the result of an investigation into stolen power tools. An additional charge was filed in O'Brien County for fifth-degree theft, as he was seen on a doorbell surveillance camera removing the camera and taking it. Additional charges were filed on June 12 by the Sioux County Sheriff's Office for DUI (second offense) and driving while suspended, both serious misdemeanors.

On Monday, August 26, in Sioux County District Court, DenHartog Hopcroft was sentenced as part of a plea agreement to a five-year prison sentence for DUI (third offense), a two-year prison sentence for operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent, a two-year prison sentence for assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, and a previously suspended five-year prison sentence for DUI (first offense) and possession of a controlled substance (third offense). All sentences will be served concurrently with the other sentences and O'Brien County prison sentences.
