Accused “quick change” scammer Ion Szep was arrested at the Woodlands Mall and was carrying $18,000 in cash and stolen goods, officials say

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (KTRK) — A suspected fraudster arrested at Woodlands Mall was found in possession of a large sum of cash related to various thefts, officials said.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said 26-year-old Ion Szep was arrested at the mall on August 22 after a short foot chase.

Investigators said Szep engaged in a “quick change” scam – a sleight of hand trick thieves use to trick cashiers into accepting less money than the total purchase amount.

When officers found Szep in the mall, he allegedly fled the scene. After a short foot chase, he was successfully arrested, the MCSO said.

Investigators searched his vehicle and found stolen merchandise and over $18,000 in cash – all related to various thefts at multiple stores, officials said.

According to MCSO, Szep was wanted on multiple warrants from across the United States. He was arrested for theft and the outstanding warrants and is currently in the Montgomery County Jail.
