Mariah Carey talks about the tragic loss of her mother and sister on the same day

Mariah Carey is mourning two major losses that occurred within a single day. In a statement to PeopleThe singer announced that her mother Patricia (87) and her sister Alison (63) died over the weekend. The cause of death for both women has not yet been announced.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life that same day,” Carey told the outlet.

The Grammy winner noted that she was able to be by her mother's side during the elderly woman's final moments. “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” Carey said. “I am grateful for everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia Carey was a classically trained opera singer and singing teacher, and she was the first person to give singing lessons to her daughter, the singer of “Vision of Love.”

However, Carey’s relationship with her mother was complicated. When the singer published her memoir, The meaning of Mariah Carey, In 2020, Carey dedicated the book to her mother, writing: “And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I think did her best. I will always love you as well as I can.”

When Patricia married Alfred Roy Carey, they had three children together: Morgan, Alison and Mariah, the youngest. When her parents separated, Alison went to live with her father, while Mariah and Morgan stayed with their mother.

Throughout her adult life, Carey lived largely estranged from her sister, but in her memoir she mentioned her sister and said that Alison had to endure much of the “turmoil” in the family.

“I know that what she experienced damaged and derailed her childhood,” Carey wrote. “She was fully aware when the family fell apart and our parents turned against each other; she absorbed all the pain of a family falling apart.” Carey later complimented her sister, saying that when they were growing up, Alison “was extremely intelligent and curious and loved to learn.”
