Tony Danza shares Frank Sinatra's 2am confession about his famous voice

Not many people can say they spent a night drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes with the late Frank Sinatra – but Tony Danza can.

In a new interview with the New York Times, the former “Who's The Boss” star, who is currently promoting his new cabaret show “Tony Danza: Sinatra & Stories,” revealed intimate details from his early morning conversation after a night of partying with the legendary singer.

“He was drinking Jack Daniel's neat and smoking Camels one after the other, so I said to him, 'Frank.' I have to say, it was weird to say Frank, but it was two in the morning and we were drinking, so I said, 'Frank. The smoking and the drinking. Does that ever ruin your voice?'” the actor recalled.

“He takes a sip of his drink, takes a drag, blows the smoke out and says, 'I've never met a self-respecting singer who didn't smoke two packs a day,'” Danza added.

For as long as he can remember, Danza has idolized Sinatra.

“My mother introduced me to Sinatra and showed me the intricacies of his music,” he told the outlet. “She would always say, 'Listen to how he sings this part.'”

During his time on “Who's the Boss?” the 73-year-old actor was keen to get Sinatra to appear on the show.

According to Danza, he was able to do this after approaching Sinatra's daughter Tina at a well-known restaurant in Los Angeles.

“The next day I got a call saying Sinatra was going to do it,” Danza said. “I don't know why he decided to do it, but when he came I drove everyone on set crazy because I told them, 'He's only doing one take. I'm going to kill anyone who messes up the take.'”

“So everyone's stiff, and we do the take, and it was good, and then Frank says, 'Do you want another take?' Everyone looked at me as if to say, 'What a moron I am,'” Danza recalled.

Danza's cabaret show begins September 10 at the Café Carlyle in New York City.

“I'm not trying to emulate him at all,” Danza said of the show. “We have new arrangements of the songs. I'm not going to sing like him or anything like that; I'm going to take the lead, just like he did when he came on stage,” Mr. Danza said. “The approach: 'I'm here and I belong here.'”
