Suspect accused of sexually assaulting sunbather in Santa Monica is arrested

A confirmed homeless man was arrested by the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) after he allegedly climbed on top of a sunbathing woman and “began bumping into her.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 27, around 1:30 p.m. in the centrally located 1300 block of Santa Monica Beach, between Arizona Ave and Santa Monica Blvd.

According to SMPD, LA County lifeguards called a police officer stationed at the beach to report that a woman had been sexually assaulted. While she was sunbathing, an unknown man climbed on top of her and began to push against her. She quickly got up and, with the help of her sister, pushed the suspect off of her, who then left the scene and walked south along the beach while the victim looked for help.

Based on the victim and witness description, SMPD officers were able to locate the suspect a short distance away. He was positively identified as Alonzo Dickson, a 25-year-old homeless man arrested for sexual battery with restraint. [243.3 PC].

The case will be referred to the District Attorney for review. Dickson remains in custody and has no criminal record in California. However, he has at least one criminal case pending against him in Washington state. As part of that investigation, detectives are looking into the details of this incident.

Anyone with information about this person or incident is asked to contact
Detective Murphy or the Watch Commander (24 hours) at 310-458-8427.
