Three dead in road accident in North Wales: Witness says pedestrian was hit

A witness has described seeing a car hit a pedestrian and then a house in a crash in north Wales that left three people dead.

The accident happened in Alma Street on the seafront near Beaumaris Pier on Anglesey, police said.

A local resident told the PA news agency that the incident was “just horrific” and that she had seen “people trying very hard to perform CPR”.

“[The vehicle] was so garbled. It's so garbled it's not true,” she said.

The witness said she was staying at a hotel overlooking the accident scene and was alerted to the incident by a “loud bang.” She added that the collision involved “a car hitting a pedestrian and then hitting a house.”

“It was just awful. The ambulance took forever to get here and when the police and vehicles finally arrived, there was nothing they could do once they got here,” she said.

“Everyone really pulled together, redirected traffic and did their best to give people their dignity, but it was pretty horrific.”

North Wales Police said officers wanted to speak to witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage.

They also asked people to avoid the area.

Ynys Môn MP Llinos Medi described the incident as “catastrophic news”.

“I am thinking of everyone affected today. This news has shocked our community here on the island,” she said.

Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of Plaid Cymru and member of the Senedd for Ynys Môn, urged people to follow police advice and avoid the area.

“This is devastating news and my sincere condolences go out to those affected and their families,” he said.

Andrew John, the Archbishop of Wales, and David Morris, the Bishop of Bardsey, issued a joint statement expressing their “sympathies and prayers” to all those involved in the crash.

“This is devastating news for the community and for the friends and families of the three people who have sadly died,” they said.

Police said officers, firefighters, rescue crews and helicopters were at the scene.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene of the accident shortly before 2.45pm (BST) on Wednesday.

Beaumaris is located in the east of the island of Anglesey and is a popular holiday destination. Many tourists visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Beaumaris Castle or the nearby Puffin Island.
