On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu reacted for the first time to the rape and murder of a doctor, writing that enough was enough and urging the country to counter the mentality that sees women as less capable, noting that the incident added to a long list of crimes against women in the country.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's cabinet has approved a proposal to introduce a new bill in the state assembly next week to prevent rape and provide for stricter punishment for such crimes. The West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum rejected her demand to resume her duties.

The protesting junior doctors in West Bengal, who have been on strike for 20 days in protest against the alleged rape and murder of a medical officer, rejected Banerjee's request to report for duty.

A member of the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum said that they would not withdraw their protests unless their demands, such as justice for the deceased postgraduate of RG Kar Hospital, were met. They also demanded suspension of Dr Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, from the health service and the same against the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the CBI has started polygraph tests on Kolkata Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Anup Dutta, who is said to be a close associate of former medical college principal Dr Sandip Ghosh. The agency will resume its investigation into rape and murder and will also probe corruption charges against Dr Ghosh. The ED will also continue its probe into the possibility of money laundering against the former principal.
