USWNT's Kristie Mewis returns to West Ham after injury layoff

play

Kristie Mewis is finally back in the running at West Ham.

The American midfielder made her first appearance for the Hammers in six months, starting and playing 36 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in a pre-season match on Thursday.

West Ham are taking part in the Perth International Football Cup, a four-team event in Australia which also includes Manchester City and Leicester City.

Mewis joined West Ham in December after winning an NWSL title with NJ/NY Gotham FC. The move was for both professional and personal reasons, as Mewis wanted to live closer to her fiancé, Chelsea and Australia star Sam Kerr.

But the 33-year-old only made three appearances for her new club before suffering an injury that ruled her out of the rest of the season. The Hammers narrowly avoided relegation in 2023/24, finishing 11th in the 12-team WSL, while bottom-place Bristol City were relegated to the Championship.

Mewis has made 53 international appearances for the USWNT, most recently as a last-minute substitute in her team's round of 16 loss to Sweden at the 2023 World Cup.

West Ham have one game left in Australia, facing Leicester in a third-place match on Sunday. The team begins its WSL campaign on September 21 against Manchester United.
