Avani Lekhara wins gold, Mona Agarwal takes bronze for India

Avani, who has been confined to a wheelchair and paralyzed below the waist since a car accident at the age of 11, became the country's first female shooter to win a medal in shooting at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics.

Avani crowned her gold medal performance in the 10m air rifle shooting with a bronze medal in the 50m rifle three positions shooting.

Defending champion Avani shot 625.8 points, finishing behind Iryna Shchetnik, who broke the Paralympics qualifying record with 627.5 points. Mona Agarwal, the two-time world championship gold medalist competing in the Paralympics for the first time, shot 623.1 points.

The SH1 shooting category applies to shooters who have impaired mobility in the arms, lower torso or legs or who are missing limbs.

The Para shooters are all ready for the Women's 10m Air Rifle (SH1) final, including India's Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal.

Avani finishes the first series of five shots with a score of 51.8. She is fourth.

Before the elimination round begins, a series of five shots each is fired.

India's Avani Lekhara is in second place after Series 2 with 103.7. Mona Agarwal is still behind with 102.7.

The Chinese Zhang Cuiping has been eliminated. After the first elimination round, Avani is jointly in first place (124.5), while Mona is in third place (124.2).

Slovakia's Veronika Vadovičová finishes sixth and is eliminated. Avani remains in the lead with 166.3, while Mona remains in 3rd place with 165.4.

Avani Lekhara is still ahead with 10.0. Remains in the lead.

Avani did it! She won the gold medal!!

Gold medal for Avani. Avani shoots 9.9. Lee hits 10.7. But in the last shot Avani hits 10.5 and Lee hits 6.8. So the gold medal goes to Avani.

Avani Lekhara scored 249.7, improving her own Paralympics record of 249.6 from Tokyo 2020. She also becomes the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at a Paralympics.
