Heartbreaking post shared by Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau's sister three days before her tragic death before her wedding

Katie Gaudreau's wedding posts earlier this week have taken on a whole new, tragic meaning following the sudden deaths of her brothers Johnny and Matthew.

National Hockey League (NHL) star Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and his 29-year-old brother Matthew were killed Thursday night (August 29) while riding their bikes in Oldmans Township, Salem County, New Jersey. According to the New Jersey State Police, the two were struck by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver.

Additional police reports obtained by CBS News Philadelphia show that the brothers were riding their bikes on County Route 551 around 8 p.m. when they were struck by a man in a Jeep. The driver was identified as Sean M Higgins and has since been arrested and charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, according to PEOPLE.

Higgins reportedly told police he had drunk “five to six beers” before the incident. What made the tragedy even worse was that Johnny and Matthew died one day before their sister's wedding, at which they were supposed to be best men.

Her sister Katie Gaudreau and her fiancé Devin Joyce were scheduled to marry on Friday (August 30) at St. Mary Parish in Gloucester City, New Jersey, according to PageSix.

The bride and groom have apparently cancelled the ceremony after the devastating news.

Just three days before her brother's death, Katie posted pictures of herself and her fiancé on Facebook with the caption: “Wedding week!! Who tells these 16 and 17 year olds they are getting married in 4 days? I can't wait to marry my best friend!!!”

The couple has known each other since school.

Many fans have since expressed their condolences in the comments on the post, with many describing how heartbreaking the situation is.

Meanwhile, Katie had been posting about her wedding festivities on social media over the past month, sharing pictures from her hen party in August and her bridal shower in July.

The Gaudreau family released a statement today saying: “Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends, but truly two amazing people.”

“We want to let everyone know that we receive your messages of love and support and that we appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers.

“We continue to ask for your respect and privacy during this very difficult time of grief. From all of our families and from the bottom of our hearts (the Gaudreau, Morris, Korbitz, Venello and Joyce families).”
