12 students injured in Khairpur classroom incident after roof collapses – ThePrint – ANIFeed

Sukkura [Pakistan]August 31 (ANI): Twelve eighth-graders were injured at a government high school in Basiro village of Khairpur district when a large piece of concrete plaster fell from the ceiling of the classroom, Dawn News reported.

The incident occurred during a class. The large pieces of plaster flew through the classroom, causing serious head injuries to several students. A harrowing video circulating online shows the chaotic scene in which students with bloody heads and faces are rushed to medical care.

A teacher at the school reported that there were 80 students in the classroom at the time of the incident – 56 boys and 24 girls. Plaster fell down in the boys' area, but fortunately no female students were injured.

Immediately afterwards, a hectic rescue operation ensued, with teaching and non-teaching staff along with villagers rushing to help the injured students, Dawn News reported.

Many of the students were taken to nearby health facilities in the villages of Pacca Chang and Basiro for treatment.

The injured students were identified as Jawad Shaikh, Islamuddin, Shafiq Ahmad, Khalid, Faraz Ahmad, Ansar Balouch, Hassan Rajpar, Gulzar Tanwari, Zuhaib, Mubarak, Nawab Ali and Nadeem.

The teacher also mentioned that several officials from the Ministry of Education have been conducting inspections of the classroom since the incident. This inspection is part of a broader investigation into the school's infrastructure, which is a cause for concern due to the ongoing renovation of the upper floors of the building.

The school was forced to hold classes in the lower part of the building, which was in a dilapidated condition due to the extensive renovation work.

This lack of maintenance contributed to the vulnerability of the classroom and highlighted systematic problems in the management of the school's infrastructure, Dawn reported.

The incident highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and maintenance protocols in educational institutions to prevent such tragedies in the future. (ANI)
