Man accused of rape in Dublin student halls of residence released on bail – The Irish Times

A man accused of raping a woman in a Dublin student halls of residence has been granted bail pending the production of evidence.

The man in his 20s, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Dublin District Court on Saturday after the Attorney General ordered that he be charged with the offence, which he is alleged to have committed last year.

Judge William Aylmer said reporting restrictions apply to ensure the anonymity of the defendant and the plaintiff.

The accused did not address the court. However, the arresting Garda told the judge that the man's response to the charge was: “I deny the allegation.”

The prosecutor ordered him to face charges before the Central Criminal Court. The judge found that the accused did not live at the place mentioned in the indictment.

Judge Aylmer ordered the man to comply with the conditions and appear in court again in September to provide him with the prosecutor's evidence and permission to reopen the case.

There was no objection to his being released on bail, but he was advised that he must inform the Gardaí of any change of address, remain contactable by mobile phone, give seven days' notice of any out-of-state travel and not make contact with the alleged victim or witnesses.

At this point in the proceedings, the court did not require any further evidence in connection with the allegation.
