Kolkata rape and murder case: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that the police offered the father money for a quick cremation of the body.

West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Saturday claimed that the parents of the aspiring doctor who was allegedly raped and killed in a Kolkata hospital were effectively being placed under “house arrest” by the authorities.

“I visited the family of the deceased doctor at their residence and spoke to them at length. The police have put the family under house arrest. They are not letting them out of the house on various pretexts. The police have put up a barricade around them, the CISF has no idea about it,” Chowdhury told reporters.

His visit comes against the backdrop of ongoing protests by junior doctors and allegations by the victim's parents that multiple people were involved in the crime.

Chowdhury also alleged that the police, on the instructions of the TMC-led West Bengal government, offered money to the victim's father and urged him to cremate the body quickly.

“The Calcutta police had offered the father money on the instructions of the state government and told him that his daughter’s body should be cremated immediately,” Chowdhury alleged.

The doctor's body was discovered in the seminar room of the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, sparking outrage in the state's medical community. Protesting junior doctors have started a walkout since the discovery, demanding justice for their colleague and tighter security measures at medical facilities.

The senior Congress leader attacked the police for preventing him from meeting the protesting doctors during his visit to RG Kar Hospital.

“I went there as a common citizen and not as a political leader to express my solidarity with them (the protesting doctors). But the police prevented me from meeting them… If they had shown this promptness earlier, our sister doctor would not have met this fate,” he said.

A volunteer of the Kolkata Police was arrested in connection with the crime and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now taken over the investigation following the orders of the Kolkata High Court.
