Texas doctors hold vigil to protest tragic death of Calcutta doctor

Hyderabad: Prominent doctors, dentists, pharmacists and health professionals representing the Texas Physicians Society – Southwest Chapter (TIPS-SW) gathered in San Antonio, USA, for a vigil to protest the murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Among those attending the protest were former president of TIPS and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), Dr. Rajam Rammurthy, TIPS president Dr. Subhashini Valvalkar and secretary Dr. Manju Badam. Each of them expressed deep concern over the incident and stressed the urgent need for stronger protection measures for medical personnel, students and women in India.

Dr Valvalkar said, “We have organised this silent protest to send a clear message to the government authorities of India. The medical staff must be protected and the victim's family must get swift justice.

Deepanjan Chakrobarty, president of the San Antonio Bengali Association, who hails from Kolkata, expressed his pain and anger over the incident. “It is outrageous that this violence continues unabated,” he said.
