Grandson arrested for murder of his 90-year-old grandfather

The old man was found in his chair with a stab wound to the neck.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in Komani, Eastern Cape, on Friday evening for the murder of his 90-year-old grandfather.

Neighbours alert police about murder by grandson

The grandson was questioned by police after the incident was reported by neighbors.

“When police arrived, they found a 90-year-old man sitting on his chair covered with a blanket. The man had a stab wound to his neck,” said police spokesman Captain Namhla Mdleleni.

A murder case is under investigation, Mdleleni added.

“During the investigation, the police found that the grandson was responsible for the murder of his grandfather. He was immediately arrested and charged with murder.”

The suspect is expected to appear before the Komani Magistrate Court on Monday.

Chris Hani District Police Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph said he was shocked by the “barbaric act” that led to the killing of the “defenceless elderly man”.

“Saps will work with NPA to ensure successful prosecutions. I urge communities to report incidents where senior citizens are harassed or abused,” he said.

Manhunt underway in Polokwane

Meanwhile, police in Polokwane's Capricorn District launched a manhunt after a man was murdered on Saturday afternoon.

Police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers arrived at the scene where an unidentified African man was lying on the ground. He said the victim had numerous injuries that appeared to be the result of an attack.

“The victim was allegedly attacked by a group of people,” Ledwaba said.

“Emergency services personnel were notified and the victim’s death was confirmed at the scene.”

The motive for the attack is not yet known.

“The police are urging the public to come forward with any information that may help identify the victim or assist in the investigation. They should contact the Polokwane Criminal Investigation Department Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ngwako Paul Ragophala, on 076 481 6301 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111, report to the nearest police station or share the information via the MySAPS app,” he said.
