34 fugitive rhino poachers arrested – myRepublica

CHITWAN, September 1: Chitwan National Park (CNP) has arrested 34 people who were at large and allegedly involved in rhino poaching.

This is the largest arrest of poachers suspected of being involved in the poaching of Indian rhinos within a year.

Last year, six people were arrested in the national park for poaching pangolins. Those accused of killing two rhinos in a trap were arrested within nine days.

Chief Conservation Officer Dil Bahadur Purja Pun said: “We have made remarkable progress in the field of conservation in the last one year. The arrest of a large number of poachers is a remarkable achievement.”

He further reported: “We managed to arrest the accused who had poached two rhinos in the Sattarchuli area.”

In addition, six people were arrested for poaching pangolins.

In recognition of their contributions to conservation, the Basant Raj Mishra Foundation honoured the CNP officers with Rs 300,000.

CNP officials, including Dil Bahadur Purja Pun, Divesh Shrestha and Prem Sharma, and an employee of the Gharial Fertility Centre were honoured with the money.
