Netflix is ​​developing a sequel to “One Tree Hill”

A sequel series to “One Tree Hill” is currently in the works at Netflix. diversity learned from sources.

According to sources, stars of the original series Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton and Daneel Ackles are executive producing the reboot. Ackles will executive produce alongside her husband Jensen Ackles under their Chaos Machine banner. Becky Hartman-Edwards (“Firefly Lane,” “Parenthood”) is set to serve as a writer and executive producer. Warner Bros. Television, which produced the original series, would also produce the sequel.

Bush and Burton would reprise their roles from the series, and Ackles is also in talks to return. It is not yet known whether other stars from the original series will also return.

Netflix and WBTV declined to comment.

The original series “One Tree Hill” ran for nine seasons on The WB and later on The CW. The cast also included Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Lenz, Paul Johansson and Lee Norris.

Set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, the series originally revolved around the rivalry between half-brothers Lucas (Murray) and Nathan (Lafferty). As their lives began to intertwine and their love of basketball united them, the series evolved into a story about friendships, relationships and family drama.

Burton played Peyton Sawyer, while Bush played Brooke Davis. Ackles played the character Rachel Gatina. Bush, Burton and Lenz previously co-hosted the “One Tree Hill” rewatch podcast “Drama Queens.” However, Burton retired from the podcast after season 6 as her character was no longer on the show. Robert Buckley, who joined “One Tree Hill” in season 7, is now the third host.

Mark Schwahn is the original creator of One Tree Hill, but is not involved in the sequel. In 2017, Schwahn was publicly accused by Burton and a number of cast and crew members of the series of assault and harassment during their time on the show. The group has spoken at length about the alleged abuse on their podcast.
