Resident doctors in Kolkata are demanding the resignation of Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal after a resident doctor was raped and murdered, while the BJP is leveling allegations against the state's ruling party.

Amid ongoing protests against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, several junior doctors in the city will march from College Street to Lalbazar on Monday demanding the resignation of Vineet Goyal as Kolkata Police Commissioner. Meanwhile, a two-day special session of the West Bengal Assembly begins today to pass a bill providing for death penalty for convicts in rape and murder cases.

This comes as the BJP continues its protests against the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress in the state, accusing it of misusing the anti-rape law as a mere political maneuver. The rape and murder of the aspiring doctor has sparked nationwide outrage and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the case on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.

PROTESTS IN BENGAL CONTINUE: KEY POINTS

  1. Protesting doctors in the state allege that the Kolkata police failed to prevent the mob attack on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the eve of Independence Day, days after the trainee doctor was raped and murdered there on August 9. Since Goyal is in charge of the police force, they are demanding his resignation. The doctors also demand that not only the main accused Sanjay Roy but also others allegedly involved in the crime should be arrested and former principal of RG Kar Sandip Ghosh should be suspended.
  2. The doctors' march has been organised by the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front (WBJDF) and is scheduled to begin at 2 pm. According to reports, it will cover College Square-Mahatma Gandhi Road-Central Avenue-BB Ganguly Street-Lalbazar Street, which may lead to traffic diversions.
  3. According to media reports, the doctors said they would not break through the police cordon and would continue marching until the police allowed them to do so.
  4. Today, the Supreme Court will hear the plea filed by the West Bengal government challenging the Calcutta High Court's decision to grant bail to one of the organisers of the August 27 'Nabanna Abhijan' march. On Friday, the Calcutta High Court had granted bail to Sayan Lahiri, leader of the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj. The Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, an unregistered student group, was one of the two organisations that had called for the August 27 march.
