Premier Winde urges completion of investigations this year

JOHANNESBURG – Almost four months after the tragic collapse of the George building, there is still no updated information in some of the ongoing investigations into the case.

On May 6, an unfinished apartment block collapsed on 62 people. 34 construction workers present on site were killed.

The SAPS, the Department of Employment and Labour, the Department of Human Settlements and the Home Builders Registration Council, among others, launched extensive investigations into the incident. None of them have yet provided an update to the province.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde called on all parties involved to speed up their investigations.

“We have agreed that we will write to the other organisations that are investigating. We know that SAPS and the Department of Labour are investigating. We really need to make sure that we complete those investigations so that there can be consequences on the cause of this building collapse. I think everyone wants closure as soon as possible and hopefully we can get that done this year.”
