HC asks Bengal government to produce documents related to arrest of four persons in connection with Nabanna march – The Week

Kolkata, Sept 2 (PTI) – The Calcutta High Court on Monday asked the West Bengal government to produce all documents related to the arrest of four persons in connection with the march to state secretariat Nabanna on August 27 to protest against the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital.
The court questioned the justification for her arrest and subsequent release 24 hours later, and asked whether the police had followed proper procedures in detaining her.
The state informed the court that the arrest was a preventive measure by the Howrah city police as it was expected that the persons might cause serious unrest during the protest march to Nabanna under the banner of the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj.
Judge Rajarshi Bharadwaj asked what specific unrest was expected and why the people were released 24 hours before the protest march on August 27.
The court ordered the state to submit all relevant documents relating to the arrests by Tuesday.
Rajdeep Majumdar, the plaintiffs' lawyer, claimed the arrests were unlawful and said they wanted the court to order compensation and take action against those responsible for the detention of the four people.
