Shots were heard during an escape attempt in Congo's largest prison in Kinshasa

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Heavy gunfire rang out from Congo's largest prison in the capital Kinshasa early Monday morning as inmates tried to break out of the overcrowded facility, authorities said.

Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya confirmed on X that it was an “escape attempt.” Local media reported that security forces had killed some of the refugees.

The shooting from the prison began around midnight, residents reported. On Monday morning, the road to the prison was blocked off by security forces.

“Security services are on site to restore order and security. The people of Kinshasa are urged not to panic,” Muyaya said.

Videos allegedly taken from inside the prison showed several bodies on the floor.

Makala Prison is Congo's largest prison and one of the most heavily fortified in the country. It is notorious for overcrowding and poor conditions for inmates. There have been previous prison escapes. including in 2017 when dozens were freed in an attack by a religious sect.

Justice Minister Constant Mutamba described Monday's incident as a “deliberate act of sabotage” that came as authorities tried to decongest prisons and improve their conditions.

“Investigations are underway to identify and severely punish those responsible for these acts of sabotage. They will receive a harsh response,” Mutamba said.
