Is Walmart open on Labor Day 2024? Hours of operation

The holiday is observed on the first Monday in September each year and is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. In addition to being a federal holiday, Labor Day also marks the traditional end of summer, and many people gather for barbecues and family gatherings.

Government offices are closed on Labor Day, but most retailers and restaurants remain open. Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, is open during regular hours on Labor Day — typically 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Some services may have reduced hours on the holiday, so check in advance.

History of Labor Day

According to a history of the holiday by the U.S. Department of Labor, the day has its origins in the late 19th century, when activists lobbied for a federal holiday to recognize the great contributions of workers to America's strength, prosperity and well-being.

The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law declaring the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
