Man beaten to death after argument over cell phone, four people arrested

New Delhi [India]September 2 (ANI): A man named Sumit Khatri was beaten to death in north Delhi's Burari area. Police reported that four suspects, including a minor, have been arrested.

The incident is said to have been the result of a dispute over a mobile phone.

The accused, Aman, Manav, Rudraksha and a 17-year-old minor, were arrested within hours of the incident, according to police.

The police said the motive for the murder was a dispute over the cell phone. The accused, all drug addicts, had tried to snatch a phone from the deceased, which led to a violent altercation that resulted in Sumit's death.

The police team analysed video footage and collected local intelligence to identify the suspects and their hideouts. The accused are said to be residents of Kaushik Enclave, Burari, police said.

Police have seized a motorcycle, a scooter and three mobile phones belonging to the accused. The clothes the suspects were wearing at the time of the incident were also confiscated, police said.

All the accused confessed their involvement in the murder. Investigation revealed that all of them were drug addicts. The Motorola mobile phone of Manav, one of the accused, was taken by another drug addict named Dinesh. He claimed that he had to make a call but did not respond, police said.

When Manav accompanied by the other suspects went to Dinesh's house to retrieve the phone, they did not find him there. Angry, the suspects demanded that Dinesh's mother return the phone. Dinesh then arranged with his acquaintance Sumit Khatri to hand over the mobile phone to the accused at Nathupura bus stand in Burari, Delhi. When the suspects saw the phone in Sumit's possession, they brutally attacked him until he died, police reported.

Further investigations into the matter are ongoing and more details are awaited. (ANI)
