Ashlyn Watkins, a key player on the South Carolina women's basketball team that won the national championship, was arrested on August 31 and charged with first-degree assault and kidnapping.

According to the Associated Press, an arrest warrant accuses the 6-foot-3 Watkins of grabbing “the victim's head” and allegedly “forcing her to walk down the hallway while controlling her movements and simultaneously preventing her from walking.”

According to several warrants issued for Watkins' arrest, the unnamed victim, who was described as a minor, was eventually able to break free from Watkins' grasp and set off a fire alarm in the South Carolina campus dormitory. When police and firefighters arrived as a result of the victim's actions, the victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The warrants also state that Watkins was read her rights and confessed to the crimes she is currently accused of.

Accordingly WLTXAt the bail hearing on August 31, prosecutors claimed the two knew each other. Watkins was ultimately granted bail of $30,000 and released at around 3:30 p.m. that same day.

Watkins' attorney Todd Rutherford told the outlet that once all the facts come to light, it will be clear that Watkins is innocent.

“We believe this will all be proven to be a misunderstanding once everyone fully understands what happened,” Rutherford said. “What we know for sure is that Ashlyn did not attack anyone and did not kidnap anyone.”

Despite Rutherford's claim, Watkins was ordered by the court to stay 1,000 feet away from the victim's home, workplace, school and place of worship. She can, however, leave the state for basketball games and practices. Watkins' next court date is scheduled for October 25.

Accordingly ESPNA spokesperson for the South Carolina University women's basketball program told the outlet, “We are aware of the situation and continue to gather information.”

Watkins is a South Carolina native and was South Carolina's 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year. Watkins led the national champion South Carolina Gamecocks in blocks and became the first player in program history to score a dunk in a game in 2022. As of this writing, Watkins has not responded to requests for comment from multiple news outlets sent through social media platforms.
