The 24-year-old Mahmud took 5-43 when Pakistan were bowled out half an hour before tea on Day 4, giving them an overall lead of 184.

Bangladesh seamer Hasan Mahmud ran wild with the ball to take Pakistan to the mat with their first five-wicket haul on the fourth day of the second Test. Mahmud went into the match with only 2 Tests of experience and showed he was ready for the big stage. The 24-year-old went wicketless in the first innings but recovered in style to dismantle Pakistan's batting line-up in the second innings.

Mahmud opened the bowling attack along with Taskin Ahmed and struck twice in the final minutes of Day 3 to get rid of Abdullah Shafique (3) and Khurram Shahzad (0). He shone on Day 4 too, picking up three more wickets and completing his five-wicket streak.

Mahmud teamed up with 21-year-old Nahid Rana and the young duo, who had a combined 9 wickets, bowled Pakistan out for a combined 184 half an hour before tea on the fourth day.

The 24-year-old bowler took the decisive wicket of Mohammad Rizwan (43), which triggered Pakistan's late collapse.

Mahmud had a hat-trick when he caught Rizwan behind after the break and followed it up with another brilliant ball that hit the outside edge of Mohammad Ali's bat. But Salman added a vital 36 runs in company at the tail-end before Mahmud completed a five-run haul by taking the last wicket.

He made his T20I debut in 2020 but it took him four years to catch the attention of the selectors and get a chance in Test cricket during the Sri Lanka series earlier this year. He has already impressed Bangladesh coaches with his ability to bowl fast.

Pakistan's battle for the top spot continues

Meanwhile, in the long-running battle for the top spot in Test cricket, Pakistan have lost five of their last nine Test matches at home, with their last victory coming against South Africa in December 2021. The other four Test matches ended in draws.

Star batter Babar Azam (11) once again failed to score much as he failed to get past fifty after 16 innings. He fell to Rana for the second time in the series as the big fast bowler upset the top order by taking three wickets in his first three overs.

Top scorers Salman Ali Agha (47 not out) and Mohammad Rizwan (43) led the fightback with a half-century partnership after Rana's outburst reduced the home side to 81-6 in the first session before Mahmud broke through the lower order.
