Full investigation into death of Jeremy Kyle Show guest

The full inquest into the death of Steve Dymond, who died of an overdose after appearing on the Jeremy Kyle Show, is due to begin on Tuesday.

Mr Dymond, from Portsmouth, Hampshire, is suspected of committing suicide seven days after filming the ITV programme in May 2019.

He had taken a lie detector test for the show after being accused of cheating on his ex-fiancée Jane Callaghan from Gosport.

The inquest is due to resume at the Coroner's Court in Winchester.

Claire Overman, representing Mr Dymond's brother Leslie Dymond and his son Carl Woolley, gave evidence before the inquest that Leslie Dymond said his brother was “incredibly stressed” after the recording, in tears and close to “breaking down”.

Hampshire Coroner Jason Pegg had previously ruled that Jeremy Kyle had called Mr Dymond a “serial liar” and said he “wouldn't trust him with even a chocolate chip cookie”.

Rachel Spearing, who was appointed counsel for the inquiry, said at a preliminary inquiry in April that the coroner had ruled that the case was not a “mobile investigation into reality TV practices”.

She said the investigation would primarily look at Mr Dymond's living circumstances between 14 March 2019 and 9 May 2019.

Ms Spearing said: “The inquest will examine the deceased’s dealings with his GP and his acceptance of and participation in The Jeremy Kyle Show.

“We will review Mr Dymond's participation in the show as relevant to his mental state, including the lie detector test and aftercare provided, and that concerns the role of the production company and ITV.”

The coroner had previously classified Jeremy Kyle as a person of interest for the inquest because he “may have caused or contributed to the death of Mr Dymond” (PA).

Ms Spearing added that investigating officers had been given access to footage from a Channel 4 documentary about Mr Dymond's death.

The coroner had previously classified Mr Kyle as a person of interest for the inquest because he “may have caused or contributed to the death of Mr Dymond”.

Other interested persons mentioned during the hearing included members of Mr Dymond's family, ITV and the deceased's GP.

The investigation is expected to last until September 10.
