Security guard dies after attack on city hotel

A security guard died while nine of his colleagues were injured when they were attacked by a gang of unknown assailants at a hostel in Ardbennie, Harare.

Liberty Chinembiri (24) was with his colleagues when the attack occurred on Tuesday last week. Since then, no arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

National Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident occurred at a hut on Iford Road in Ardbennie, Waterfalls.

“A security officer, Liberty Chinembiri, 24, was attacked by unknown suspects while on duty with nine other security officers and was found with multiple injuries behind the lodge. He was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital where he died on arrival,” he said.

In another incident, five men from Wedza were arrested on suspicion of killing a mentally disabled patient. They accused him of destroying a wooden door and the rear-view mirror of a vehicle belonging to one of the suspects.

The incident occurred on Saturday in Chihowa village and the victim, Cadillac Njodzi (37), died after being admitted to hospital.

Comm Nyathi said Peter Mandeya (65), Simbarashe Mandeya (40), Felix Chigodora (24), Brain Mandeya (21) and Munashe Chigodora (25) attacked the mentally ill Cadillac Njodzi (37) with rods and kicked him all over his body.

“This happened after the victim destroyed a wooden door and rear view mirror of a Nissan Hardbody vehicle at the residence of Peter Mandeya in Chihowa village, Svosve, Wedza on August 30, 2024. The victim died in hospital on Saturday,” he said.

Police in Harare are investigating a road accident on Saturday on the Harare-Bulawayo road in which a pedestrian was injured after being hit by a Toyota Hiace station wagon with registration number ABZ 2624. The driver took the victim to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment and disappeared before reporting the accident. A manhunt has now been launched for the driver.
