Five children have been arrested in connection with the murder of an 80-year-old man who died in an attack in a park.

The victim, who was walking his dog in Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, was seriously attacked on Sunday and died in hospital last night.

A boy and a girl, both 14 years old, and a boy and two girls, all 12 years old, were arrested on suspicion of murder.

The attack occurred around 6.30pm near the entrance to Franklin Park in Bramble Way.

The victim was probably wearing a black sweater and grey sweatpants.

According to police, the attackers disappeared before rescue workers arrived.

Detective Inspector Emma Matts said: “We still need people who were in the area to come forward if they saw anything or have any information that could be helpful.”

“Were you in the Franklin Park or Bramble Way area on Sunday evening around 6.30pm?

“Did you see the attack yourself? Based on the description, did you see the victim before the incident or possibly a group of young people leaving the area afterwards?”

Police said officers were still at the scene and that “calming patrols” were in place in the area.

Braunstone Town is located about 4 km southwest of Leicester city centre.

Based on previous contact with the victim, Leicestershire Police will also be contacting the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).
