49ers rookie released from hospital after being shot in the chest

A rookie wide receiver has been released from the hospital after being shot through the chest over the holiday weekend.

The San Francisco 49ers said in a statement that first-round draft pick Ricky Pearsall is expected to recover from the ordeal, but he will be placed on the non-football injured list for the time being, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the season.

“San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was released from the hospital this afternoon as he continues to recover from a gunshot wound to his chest,” the team said in a statement.

“He and his family, as well as the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department, EMS, doctors and staff at San Francisco General Hospital.”

Pearsall's mother said on Facebook that the bullet missed his vital organs and that Pearsall was “in good spirits.”

Pearsall, a freshman from Florida, was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at the corner of Geary Street and Grant Avenue in San Francisco shortly before 4 p.m. on August 31.

During the attempted robbery, a physical altercation occurred, resulting in injuries to both the suspect and Pearsall. The suspect is in custody.

Pearsall was expected to provide depth at receiver for the 49ers behind stars Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

His injury likely means more playing time for Jauan Jennings, veteran Chris Conley, former Michigan wide receiver Ronnie Bell and rookie Jacob Cowing.
