Couple convicted of robbing illegal marijuana dispensary in Warren

Two men were found guilty last Friday of attempted murder, robbery and conspiracy for robbing an illegal marijuana dispensary in Warren and shooting a security guard last year.

Lavall E. Perkins, 64, of Detroit, and Micheal D. Graham, 49, of Eastpointe, were found guilty on all counts by a jury following a seven-day jury trial before Macomb County District Judge Edward Servitto.

When the verdict is announced on October 16, the two men face several years in prison. Both men have virtually no previous convictions.

Perkins' attorney, Steve Freers, said his client had no knowledge of the impending robbery, adding that he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when he set off with Graham and a third, unidentified man who appeared to be the ringleader.

“I think he was an innocent victim of his own stupidity,” Freers said. “He was drunk and high and didn't know what was going on.”

He said they were driving around, drinking and smoking, “hanging out with the driver, and before he knew it,” the robbery had happened.

The incident occurred June 9 when one of the suspects was causing a disturbance outside the Bring Me A Bag pharmacy on Sherwood Avenue, north of 10 Mile Road, police and prosecutors said. The unidentified suspect fired shots through the glass door, hitting a security guard who was responding to the call, according to the Macomb District Attorney's Office. The unidentified suspect unlocked the door and shot the victim again as he backed away, prosecutors said. He and Perkins then entered the store and stole the safe, prosecutors said. Both robbers left the store and walked to a waiting Chevy Tahoe driven by Graham, who worked at the pharmacy. The safe, which was not found, was placed in the truck.

Freers said his client was asked by the shooter to steal marijuana and fled when he didn't find any.

Within hours of the incident, police identified the Chevy Tahoe used by the suspects through a license plate reader.

This information led them to Graham's home in Eastpointe, where he and Perkins were arrested as they left the house. Preliminary interview information indicated that both had a large amount of cash in their pockets. However, the men claimed the money was obtained legally.

The perpetrator who shot the security guard was never identified.

A fourth man was charged, but those charges were dropped because he was not involved in the incident. The pharmacy was later closed.
