Suspects in seven-year-old murder case appear in court

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Two suspects accused of shooting a 7-year-old girl in Providence appeared in court today.

Ahmari Cabrera, 19, of Providence, and Shaheem Nathaniel, 26, of Cranston, were formally charged with murder in connection with the girl's death on Carleton Street on Thursday, August 29.

The 7-year-old succumbed to her injuries after being in critical condition at Hasbro Children's Hospital for three days.

During the arraignment of the two men, relatives were seen in the courtroom. The argument escalated inside the building and spilled onto the nearby street.

In addition to the murder charge, the two men each face 11 other charges, including conspiracy, possession of a ghost gun and assault with intent to murder.

Both men did not confess.

Both Cabrera and Nathaniel are being held without bail.

Providence police said the investigation is ongoing.
