Ishan Kishan is likely to miss the opening match of the Duleep Trophy

What is the story

It is not certain whether Ishan Kishan, the wicketkeeper-batter of Team D, will take part in the opening match of the Duleep Trophy 2024, scheduled to be held in Anantapur on September 5.

The exact reason for Kishan's possible withdrawal is not yet known, but it is believed that he may be recovering from an injury.

In his absence, Sanju Samson could be called up as a replacement.

Future participation in the Duleep Trophy uncertain

Kishan's future participation in the Duleep Trophy, a four-day first-class tournament, is currently unclear.

His possible comeback also depends on whether he is selected for the Indian team's two Test matches against Bangladesh.

Despite this uncertainty, there is still a chance that he could feature in the later stages of this six-match competition, in which each team plays three games.

His recent performance at the Buchi Babu tournament

Kishan recently represented his state Jharkhand team at the Buchi Babu tournament in Chennai.

The wicketkeeper-batter, who played in two matches, led Jharkhand from the front in the opening match against Madhya Pradesh, scoring a century and later rescuing Jharkhand in a tough chase.

However, Jharkhand suffered a defeat in the second game, which led to their elimination from the tournament.

Kishan's disciplinary problems and possible return

Ishan, who scored a double century in an ODI, is aiming for a return to international cricket.

In February this year, the BCCI terminated the one-year contracts of Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. The duo had come under scrutiny after the BCCI had roped in the contracted players to play first-class cricket.

Iyer was left out of the squad for the last three England Tests and sat out the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals. Kishan had taken a personal break.

More players missing from the Duleep Trophy

Besides Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav could also miss the multi-day Duleep Trophy tournament as he sustained a hand injury in the Buchi Babu tournament.

He is currently recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has also withdrawn all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and pacer Mohammed Siraj from the competition for different reasons.
