Alan Shearer teased over incident with Sunderland fans – “He hid like a weasel” | Football | Sport

Alan Shearer has been accused of behaving “like a weasel” after being mobbed by Sunderland fans. The Newcastle United legend found himself in a highly uncomfortable position on Saturday.

After attending a friend's wedding in Italy, Shearer and his family were due to fly back to their hometown, but a flight cancellation meant they had to fly to Heathrow instead and take a train back north.

Unfortunately for him, that moment coincided with the Black Cats fans returning from their 3-1 Championship win at Portsmouth. Shearer admitted earlier this week that he was “petrified” during the four-hour journey, keeping his head down the entire time.

His colleague Micah Richards has since teased him about his behaviour. Speaking on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards said: “But it's funny, you give it your all, Al, 'this Sunderland, that Sunderland'. But when he was on the train, it was you who was hiding like a little weasel.”

Shearer took it in his stride and laughed as presenter Gary Lineker joked: “You know what's worse, Micah? He sneaked into the toilet and put on a Sunderland shirt.”

“I had to go to the toilet so badly, I couldn't move. I was scared to go to the toilet,” repeated Shearer, who was at least rewarded for his ordeal by being able to watch his beloved team's 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

He had delivered a “f*** you” message to the Sunderland fans in question after first telling his colleagues on Match of the Day and on the Richards and Lineker podcast about the harrowing experience: “Gary, Micah, I had an absolute disaster. I was sitting there thinking you two were absolutely loving this.”

“We're not in first class, we're in economy, and I look and think, 'Oh my bloody God,' Sunderland have played Portsmouth away. So I've got my cap on and I'm sitting wedged in the corner of economy, and they come, it's getting more and more crowded and there's not a single seat left. [and] The whole aisle is filled with Sunderland fans chanting “P****d” and all coming with their beer bottles.

“After half an hour I can't even lift my head. I'm scared because I think it's just full of them because they're all in great spirits, their team has just won and they start singing the Newcastle songs. Then they start singing the Shearer songs – 'Shearer, Alan Shearer, oh what it can mean to a sad Geordie…'

“I can't even sing the other song they sang. My neck hurt like hell, I couldn't lift my head. I was terribly scared when I left the station because nobody recognized me.

“I didn't move at all for four hours and wasn't even noticed and they just sang and abused me for four hours. So to all the Sunderland fans driving back with Coach C: fuck you, I can hear you all.”

Sunderland are aiming to catch up with their arch rivals in the Premier League and are currently top of the Championship table. With the latest win, the team has secured a perfect start to the season after four matchdays.
