A shocking video appears to show a Manchester police officer punching a man, weeks after the same police unit came under fire for a brutal arrest at the airport.

The footage was taken yesterday in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester and shows an officer delivering three powerful punches during the arrest.

Witnesses gathered as a group of uniformed officers pinned the man to the ground as he screamed in pain.

Crowds gathered to watch the violent scene. One witness shouted, “Why are you so mean?”

Another asked why the officers beat the man.

A witness said: “I heard a big commotion and saw the police running towards this guy. He was already down and they hit him three times on the head and I think they hit his eye open.

“It was way more than necessary. He was just a skinny guy and these were all big officers. He was already on the ground.”

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers in the city centre were called to reports of a fight between two men in Piccadilly Gardens shortly before 10.30pm on Monday 2 September 2024.”

“Officers arrived, broke up the fight and arrested several people. One of the suspects resisted arrest by officers.

“According to witnesses at the scene, one of the men was found to have sustained injuries consistent with being struck in the face with an object prior to police arrival. The man was treated at the scene.

“Following initial investigations, those arrested have been released pending further investigations. Our Professional Standards Directorate is reviewing all available footage, including footage taken by witnesses at the scene and body-worn video taken by police officers.”

Just a few weeks earlier, video footage appeared to show a Greater Manchester Police officer apparently kicking a man in the head during his arrest at Manchester Airport.

Muhammad Amaaz, 19, was tasered in an incident at Manchester Airport and was lying face down when a police officer appeared to step on and stamp on his head.

The unnamed Greater Manchester Police officer was suspended the following day and the force handed itself over to the regulator.

The two brothers involved in the fight were arrested after a video appeared to show them hitting the police officer.
