Irish teacher who spoke out against transgender policy was arrested at school for violating a court order

Police arrested Irish teacher Enoch Burke this week for the third time since he first criticized his school for spreading transgender ideology two years ago.

On Monday, the Irish National Police, An Garda Síochána, arrested Burke outside Wilson's Hospital School in County Westmeath, where he had previously worked as a history and German teacher, and later took him to Mountjoy Prison, a men's prison in Dublin.

Burke's X-Account, currently run by his brother Josiah, later released footage of the arrest.

“I will not turn my back on my students,” Enoch Burke was heard saying in the video as he was placed in the back seat of a police vehicle.

He said: “I have a right to my job. I have a right to work here. I have a right to be here and not to tell students that they have to take puberty blockers.”

Burke was also heard criticizing the police officers who arrested him, telling them, “You are not obligated to do the wrong thing.”

Later that same day, Newsweek reported that a judge had ruled that Burke should be returned to Mountjoy Prison after he disobeyed a court order not to appear on campus after the school year began last month. The judge reportedly said Burke could be released if he promised to comply with the court order in the future, but Burke did not give a definitive answer.

According to the Irish Times, Burke's case will be reviewed again on October 11. Until then, he will remain in Mountjoy Prison.

Irish teacher Enoch Burke fought back against Scottish police on Monday.

According to Newsweek, Burke was suspended from his job in September 2022 after publicly objecting to addressing a transgender student by his preferred name and pronouns. He was later jailed for “contempt of court” after violating a Supreme Court order to stay away from school during his disciplinary hearing.

According to Burke, he was unable to comply with the order “for reasons of conscience”. He was sentenced to prison in Mountjoy, where he will remain until December 2022.

However, Newsweek reported that he violated the court order again in September 2023, leading to his second arrest and detention. A judge later ordered his release in June during the school holidays.
