Jack Black and Jason Momoa team up

“Anything you dream of here, you can do,” says Jack Black in the first trailer for “A Minecraft Movie,” which will be released in theaters on April 4, 2025.

He then solemnly announces, “I… am Steve,” which elicits a groan from the rest of the crew, who have been transported to this clunky video game world.

Directed by Jared Hess, the filmmaker behind Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, A Minecraft Movie also stars Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge. Warner Bros. and Legendary are backing the adaptation of one of the best-selling video games in history (it has 140 million monthly users).

In the first footage from “A Minecraft Movie,” Black and Momoa encounter Piglins and Creepers as they navigate the ever-changing fantasy universe.

Minecraft was launched in 2011 and allows players to create 3D worlds using colorful blocks. It has also spawned numerous spinoffs, such as Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Legends. Mojang Studios, the Swedish developer behind the game, was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 and will serve as the film's producer.

In conversation with diversity Speaking about the stunts in the film, Brooks said: “I got strapped in a few times. It's mostly about the fight and learning those moves. And I have a gun, I promise you that. Danger, danger! But actually it's Jack Black, he's the one who does the heavy lifting here. He flies a little bit and has all the techno fire behind him.”

With “A Minecraft Movie,” Black cemented his status as Hollywood's most in-demand actor for feature films, having previously starred in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Jumanji: The Next Level” and “Borderlands.” Momoa, meanwhile, has starred in blockbuster franchises such as “Aquaman,” “Dune” and “Fast & Furious.”
