Former headmaster approaches Supreme Court against CBI investigation into financial irregularities

The Supreme Court is hearing an ex officio case concerning the rape and murder of the 31-year-old junior doctor who was found dead in a seminar room on August 9. An autopsy confirmed that she was raped and murdered.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage and protests. Doctors in several parts of the country began to strike, demanding stricter laws and tighter police prevention to ensure the safety of medical staff.

The Supreme Court had put the state in its place and also directed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to take over the security of the hospital after examining a complaint by doctors about alleged police inaction.

Notably, the Calcutta High Court also took up the case and questioned the state on whether there was any urgent need for renovation near the crime scene.

The Supreme Court later transferred the investigation into the murder case to the CBI.

In the meantime, Dr. Ghosh initially resigned from his post following the scandal. However, he was immediately reappointed by the state as the principal of another college, the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

The Calcutta High Court strongly opposed this and reprimanded the State for reinstating Dr. Ghosh. Dr. Ghosh then decided to take a long leave.

Later, on August 23, the Supreme Court also ordered a CBI investigation into the alleged financial irregularities at the college.

This came after one Akhtar Ali, the former deputy director of RG Kar Hospital, filed a case in the Supreme Court accusing Dr Ghosh of serious violations of law during his tenure.
