North Texas woman charged with attempting to drown 3-year-old girl

EULESS, Texas (CBS News Texas) – An Euless woman accused of attempting to drown a 3-year-old Muslim girl in May has been indicted by a Tarrant County grand jury on attempted capital crimes, among other charges.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the girl's mother was not yet ready to speak publicly but was pleased with the act.

CAIR Texas said what happened to her two young children at the pool of her apartment complex will traumatize her forever.

“She was just watching them from outside when a lady came to the pool area and bombarded her with some questions: where was she from and why wasn't she speaking English with her children?” said Shaimaa Zayan of CAIR-Austin.

Zayan said the conflict had become violent.

“She jumped into the swimming pool and tried to pull the son out. He is bigger and heavier and managed to escape, but then she pulled the little girl into the deeper part of the swimming pool and put her face in the water to drown her,” she said.

She said a Good Samaritan intervened to save the three-year-old girl.

Now newly obtained court documents show that 42-year-old Elizabeth Wolf has been charged with attempted capital crime and assault on a child under 15, including an aggravated hate crime.

Zayan met with the family at the weekend.

“They are happy and full of hope and are waiting for final and comprehensive justice,” she said. “We hope for the maximum punishment.”

They are grateful for all the support they have received. President Joe Biden condemned the attack on social media over the summer. Texas State Representative Salman Bhojani also weighed in.

“I have experienced hate myself,” Bhojani said. “This is not the first incident and my goal is to always fight against hate of any kind because hatred against one person or group is hatred against all of us. I am grateful that the grand jury held Wolf accountable for this act.”

CBS News Texas reached out to Wolf's attorney for comment but did not receive a response.
