GHY/IMP, September 4: Six people were killed in a severe landslide on National Highway 29 in Nagaland on Tuesday evening, triggered by incessant rains.
Further information on the six people killed, such as their identity and origin, is not currently available.
Numerous vehicles were seriously damaged by the landslides. Trucks were submerged in mud and earth and many others became stuck on the highway.
Landslides also occurred at several places along the highway, washing away or blocking parts of the highway, disrupting road connectivity between the commercial hub of Dimapur and the state capital of Kohima. Several houses and street food stalls were also damaged.
Many vehicles were stranded after the incidents. Official sources said that given the severity of the disasters, it would take some time to clear the road.
Prime Minister Neiphiu Rio said authorities were assessing the situation.
“I am deeply concerned about the large-scale destruction on NH-29 caused by the incessant rain. Authorities are on the ground to assess the situation and assist those affected. The state government will continue to engage with the Government of India and @nhidcl for immediate action and restoration of normalcy as soon as possible,” he posted on X.
The Dimapur Police Commissioner’s office has issued an alert to commuters.
“In view of the massive mudslide at Pherima, landslide at Tseipama/Piphema and another major landslide on NH 29 (Pagala Pahar/New Chumoukedima) which has washed away an entire stretch of the road, all vehicular traffic between Kohima and Dimapur on NH-29 is closed as this stretch of road is impassable,” the alert said.
It added, “The alternative route via Pimla-Mhainamtsi for commuters between Kohima and Dimapur is also not recommended due to the above mentioned mudslides/landslides. The Niuland-Kohima road via Zhadima is to be used only by light motor vehicles. Heavy vehicles are not allowed to use this route.”
Citizens are urged to take extreme precautions during these weather conditions and plan their travels accordingly.
National Highway 29 extends to Manipur and the state is heavily dependent on this major artery for its supplies.
